why yoga?

The Women's Heart Foundation recommends yoga to improve cardio-respiratory function, improve muscular strength and flexibility, and reduce physical and emotional stress.

The American Academy of Sports Medicine recommends increasing flexibility through exercises like yoga.

The UC Berkeley Wellness Center recommends yoga as a stress reducer.

The Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation recommends weight bearing physical activity, like yoga, to reduce bone loss.

is yoga enough of a workout?

If your primary goal is to increase stamina and strength, try our Be Well Flow and/or Be Well Core classes.

will i gain weight without cardio?

Until a familiarity with the postures is established, you may not "flow" from one posture to the next. Initially you may want to supplement your yoga with swimming or walking. Your newfound flexibility and strength will make everything easier!

i'm really inflexible. will everyone be putting their foot behind their head?

Most adults who have played a sport or have done any weight training are inflexible. With your commitment to a consistent practice, of at least 3 days a week, you will become more flexible and will feel better.

will someone be there to suggest modifications?

One of the best things about yoga is there is always more and always less. Our teachers, who are sensitive to their students' needs and limitations, can suggest modifications to suit the beginner as well as the seasoned student.

is it religious?

Yoga is not a religion. Be Well is a multicultural, nondenominational community of people committed to kindness, compassion, intelligence and strength. Singing or chanting is offered on occasion, but is completely optional.

what to bring to class? what do i wear?

For your first class, we will provide you with a mat. Our retail store sells a variety of mats for your future use. All the classes offered are done barefoot. Wear comfortable loose clothes and bring a towel and bottle of water.

what can i expect to gain from a class at be well?

Along with strengthening and opening the body, one can expect to soothe the spirit, ease the mind and leave feeling wonderful. Unlike other forms of training, you will feel better immediately. And the more you do, the better you feel! That's what sets it apart.
